What is P&I?

What is P&I?

When considering the insurance of a ship, the ship owner has main two areas to think of, physical damage to the ship and its equipment (normally covered by a Hull and Machinery policy) and third party liabilities arising out of the ownership and operation of a vessel.

These ship owner’s liabilities tend to dealt with by a Protection and Indemnity Association . The P&I insurer (commonly called a P&I Club) arranges mutually funded insurance for its ship owner clients (who, because the insurance is mutual, are called members).
