Africa Marine Services

Established in 2001, by experienced P&I professionals – two of whom had previously spent a number of years working for the managers of the UK P&I Club – Africa Marine Services acts as Protection and Indemnity (P&I) correspondents in the main shipping ports of West Africa.

Since it was set up, the company has gained a reputation for service and reliability and now counts all of the major P&I insurers and some leading H&M underwriters amongst its clients. Now, having recently celebrated 20 years of service to the maritime community, the company continues to expand and bring in younger seafarers and other P&I professionals in order to strengthen the team both in London and West Africa.

Because a ship can trade to any port in the world and can require assistance in that port, the P&I Insurers have developed a network of representatives or ‘Correspondents’ to assist their ship owner members when vessels have a problem. P&I is an essential part of the shipping industry and some representatives have been working with the P&I Clubs since they were formed in the mid 19th Century.

The Role of Africa Marine Services

The role of Africa Marine Services is to assist the officers and crew of a ship when they have a P&I or H&M related problem in a port where we have an office. This assistance can take many forms but regularly includes; arranging surveys and tallies, carrying out claims handling, providing local assistance with Ports, Immigration and Medical Authorities, appointing Lawyers (where necessary) repatriating stowaways and generally helping a vessel when it is in a foreign and sometimes unknown port.

We employ expatriate and local Master Mariners, shipping experts, locally trained marine surveyors and marine insurance professionals to ensure that the service we provide is second to none. Our offices are equipped with modern technology and are properly resourced with suitable vehicles and support staff to ensure a rapid response to any problem.
